How to avoid fatty liver
Fatty liver disease (FLD) is a condition in which excess fat builds up in the liver. It is a common condition, affecting up to 30% of adults worldwide. There are two main types of FLD:
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): This is the most common type of FLD and is not caused by alcohol consumption. NAFLD is often associated with obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic conditions.
- Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD): This type of FLD is caused by excessive alcohol consumption.
FLD can lead to a number of health problems, including liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. There is no cure for FLD, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk of developing it.
Here are some tips on how to avoid fatty liver:
- Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity is a major risk factor for NAFLD. Aim to maintain a healthy body weight by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.
- Eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet for FLD includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It is also important to limit your intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and saturated and unhealthy fats.
- Exercise regularly. Exercise helps to reduce weight, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce inflammation. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
- Limit alcohol consumption. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. For healthy adults, the recommended limit is two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.
- Manage other health conditions. If you have other health conditions that are associated with FLD, such as diabetes or obesity, work with your doctor to manage these conditions.
