Scooters covered by Medicare
Medicare Part B covers power-operated vehicles (scooters), walkers, and wheelchairs as durable medical equipment (DME).
To be covered by Medicare, the scooter must:
- Be used in the home
- Be prescribed by a doctor
- Be rented or purchased from a Medicare-approved supplier
Medicare will pay 80% of the Medicare-approved amount for the scooter after you meet your Part B deductible. You will be responsible for the remaining 20%.
Here are some of the scooters that are covered by Medicare:
- Three-wheel scooters
- Four-wheel scooters
- Travel scooters
- Heavy-duty scooters
To find a Medicare-approved supplier of scooters, you can use the Medicare Supplier Directory. You can also contact your local Medicare office for more information.
Here are some tips for getting a scooter covered by Medicare:
- Get a written prescription from your doctor.
- Make sure the scooter is rented or purchased from a Medicare-approved supplier.
- Be prepared to pay your Part B deductible and 20% of the Medicare-approved amount.
